Lystbækgaard has the sheep breed Spælsau.
The breed originates from Norway. The wool was previously spun using hand spools and then used to weave square sails for the Viking ships.
Spælsau wool comes in many different shades. The wool has two layers, namely guard hairs and underwool.
The guard hairs, which are shiny, long and strong, can be used for rope.
The underwool, which is short and soft, can be spun into a very nice yarn.
Spælsau sheep can stay outside year round because of their special guard hairs that lead water away. After the sheep shakes itself, it is almost dry.
The sheep breed has many interesting characteristics, such as the fact that the animals shed their wool on their own. You can therefore pluck the wool from the sheep. The plucked wool is the most soft and exclusive wool you can get as a hand spinner.
